Begin with the lab product, not a generic metal label
A metal-print decision has three independent parts: the base that shows through the image, the surface finish, and the mount that supports the panel. Ask for all three on the quote. This article compares published product descriptions and offers a decision worksheet; Practical Photo Notes has not physically tested these panels and does not sell them.
For concrete references, WHCC's Metal Prints lists white or clear bases with several finishes and hanging options. Bay Photo's MetalPrints describes dye infused into specially coated aluminium and names five surface choices. These are those labs' products, not a specification shared by every metal-print supplier.
Keep the decisions separate
Decision | What to ask the supplier | Why it changes your choice |
|---|---|---|
White or clear base | Does the metal show through light areas? | A different base changes how the file is rendered |
Surface | Exact gloss, semi-gloss, satin or matte product name | Similar marketing names may refer to different surfaces |
Mount | Included hardware, panel weight and installation instructions | The wall and hardware must work together |
Proof | Crop preview, colour proof or physical surface sample? | Each answers a different question |
Do not infer a universal winner from the word glossy or matte. Judge the actual sample in the room. If a lab offers one image on several surfaces, that is a more direct comparison than photographs of different subjects under different lighting.
A room check you can perform
Stand where the print will normally be viewed and note the windows and lamps reflected in that wall position. Repeat at the time of day the room is used. Ask the lab which sample represents the exact base and finish on your quote. Record the result; do not call a screen mock-up a physical glare test.
Bay Photo's product FAQ discusses room lighting and its surface comparison samples. Its guidance is product-specific. We have not measured a finish's glare, colour or longevity here.
Compare the same image and size
Product | Base and finish | Mount and total weight | Proof type | Your room observation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
First quoted panel | Copy the exact name | Confirm with supplier | Specify | Record after a real sample |
Second quoted panel | Copy the exact name | Confirm with supplier | Specify | Record under the same light |
Compare the same file, crop, dimensions and viewing position. Otherwise a preferred subject or a different size can be mistaken for a better material. Keep shipping, mounting and any framing on the total-cost line.
What this page does not provide
There is no Practical Photo Notes print catalogue, checkout or owned landscape archive. If you want another photographer's work, identify the actual photographer and the exact listing, then confirm availability, size and terms with that seller. A reference on this site does not give permission to reproduce an image.
For your own file and a crop/proof handoff, use the custom metal-print checklist. For placing a panel, use the wall-art size calculator; its geometry does not establish file quality or mounting safety. Sources were checked 26 October 2026.
