Print sizing tool
Wall Art Print Size Calculator
Use this wall art size calculator to find a print size that fits your wall and the furniture below it. Enter a wall width and room context to get a target size range, a standard print size, a suggested hanging height, and a to-scale preview. Every measurement stays in your browser.
How the print size is calculated
The calculator starts with measured geometry, not a fixed size list. On an open wall, a print is targeted at 50-68% of the usable wall width depending on the room context. When you enter a furniture width, the target switches to 62-80% of that furniture width so the print sits in proportion above the piece.
The height follows the orientation you choose: landscape at 3:2, portrait at 2:3, or square at 1:1. The width range is capped when a tall print would push the top of the artwork too close to the ceiling or leave less than a 6 in gap above furniture. If the measured space cannot hold the smallest standard print while keeping that 6 in gap and a 3 in clearance below the ceiling, the calculator reports that no feasible placement exists instead of forcing a size.
Hanging height starts from an eye-level center of 57-60 in from the floor. Above furniture, the print rises if needed to keep at least a 6 in gap below it. The preview and summary report the center, top, and bottom positions together so the result can be checked against the real wall.
Viewing distance is a cross-check only. The tool compares a rough 40-60% of the distance from the usual viewing spot with the wall-based range and notes whether a smaller or larger piece might also work. It does not override the measured wall.
Standard print sizes this tool considers
| Orientation | Common sizes (inches) |
|---|---|
| Landscape (3:2) | 18 × 12, 24 × 16, 30 × 20, 36 × 24, 45 × 30, 60 × 40 |
| Portrait (2:3) | 12 × 18, 16 × 24, 20 × 30, 24 × 36, 30 × 45, 40 × 60 |
| Square (1:1) | 12 × 12, 16 × 16, 20 × 20, 24 × 24, 30 × 30, 36 × 36, 40 × 40 |
The recommendation shows the largest standard size inside the target range. When no standard size fits, it shows the nearest one and says so.
How to measure before you buy
- Measure the clear wall width between obstacles, not the full room width.
- Measure floor to ceiling so the tool can keep the top of the print below the ceiling.
- If the print will hang above a sofa, console, or bed, measure that piece's width and height.
- Measure from the usual viewing spot to the wall to run the viewing check.
Mark the target width and hanging center on the wall with painter's tape before ordering. A full-size outline is the quickest way to confirm the scale in the actual room.
What this calculator does not do
- It does not include a frame, mat, or hanging hardware in the size range. Those add width and height to the finished piece.
- It does not crop or inspect a photograph; a 3:2 photo cropped to square loses edges.
- It does not confirm that a specific size or material is in stock, and it does not quote a price.
- It recommends one piece for one measured wall area; it does not lay out a gallery wall.
- It does not upload, store, or transmit your measurements. Everything runs in this browser tab.
Common questions
What size wall art should hang above a sofa?
A common starting point is artwork that spans about two-thirds to three-quarters of the sofa or console width. Enter the furniture width in the calculator and it uses that range instead of the full wall width.
How high should wall art hang?
Center a single piece at eye level, roughly 57 to 60 inches from the floor. Above furniture, leave at least a 6-inch gap between the bottom of the print and the furniture top. The calculator reports a center range and the top and bottom positions. If the available space cannot hold the smallest standard print with those clearances, it returns no size instead of a placement that overlaps the furniture or ceiling.
Should I choose landscape, portrait, or square?
Start with the orientation of the photograph. Landscape prints suit wide walls and furniture groupings; portrait prints suit narrow walls and tall spaces; square prints work well in pairs or grids. The size chart responds to the orientation you choose.
Does the recommendation include a frame or mat?
No. The ranges describe the print itself. If you plan to frame the print with a mat, add the mat and frame width to the print dimensions when checking the wall.
Can the calculator plan a gallery wall?
It recommends one print for one measured wall area. For a gallery wall, measure each section separately and keep consistent gaps between frames; the tool does not lay out multiple pieces.
Put the measurement to work
Take the size range and hanging height to your printer or framer, then compare them with the other guides and tools on this site.
